Happy Birthday, Animal Crossing!

Can you believe we’ve been in quarantine for a year now? I swore this whole mess with COVID would be over by the time my birthday rolled around, but alas. What a time to be alive, am I right? You know what else is a year old and considerably more fun than COVID? That’s right, you guessed it, Animal Crossing New Horizons! *trumpets blaring*.

The newest addition to the Animal Crossing family was release on March 20, 2020 and to be blunt, I am obsessed with it. I knew that I needed to get the game after I saw my roommate playing it . I have played about 500 hours so far and I show no signs of slowing down. I genuinely believe that playing ACNH is one of the reasons that I was able to maintain a good attitude (for the most part) in the beginning of COVID. Even now that I’m mentally stronger and I feel really good about my life again, I still really enjoy designing my island and playing the game. Because I love the game so much, I felt that I had to celebrate it’s first birthday.

If you are unfamiliar with Animal Crossing, allow me to enlighten you. Animal Crossing is a game that is about starting life on a deserted island. At the beginning of the game, your character, and two other animals villagers, decide to move to another island to start a new life. On your new island, you can fish, collect seashells and fossils, buy art, clothes, start a museum, craft objects and materials to design your space, travel to other islands and play with friends, and the list goes on. Basically, the game is a perfect escape from reality when you just want to chill and feel cozy and happy.

In the earlier days of the pandemic, I would come home from work with chips and guacamole and sit on my bed to play Animal Crossing for a while. It was a great routine for days when I felt overwhelmed because it helped me to get out of my head for a while and just be. For me, this game is a nice reminder that little things can really make a huge difference in your life. I’m not usually someone who likes video games, so I never thought that a game would help me to feel calm during the craziness of last year.

I honestly could go on and on about this game, but I don’t want to bore all of you, so instead I’m just going to share some pictures of some of my favorite AC moments that I have had so far… Enjoy!
